Smart Cards, Transport Ticketing and Cashless Payments

Smart Ticketing Projects

Fenbrook Consulting and CEO Trevor Crotch-Harvey have experience in the fields of smart ticketing and cashless payments going back seventeen years, when he supplied the first contactless cards to London Transport for the Harrow Bus London – the forerunner of Oyster. Now, since environmental issues have become a global concern, politicians and Local Authorities around the world are looking for more ways to encourage people out of their cars and thereby increase ridership on public transport.

From London to Hong Kong, from Washington to Brisbane, cities around the world have adopted smart ticketing, with great benefits to the travelling public and reductions in congestion. Trevor Crotch-Harvey has travelled the world working with transport operators in many countries on smart ticketing projects, giving Fenbrook Consulting a global view of this now substantial industry. He has worked on smart ticketing projects in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Luxembourg and the UK. He has also carried out consulting projects for the UK Department for Transport on the costs and benefits of implementing smart cards in Transport.

Contactless Payments and NFC Mobile Phones

Now the landscape is changing again. Bank issued EMV contactless cards and NFC mobile phones are being introduced to mass transit schemes. This means the transport operator no longer needs to worry about managing a card scheme, saving substantial costs. And travellers can use cards and phones already in their possession without worrying about where to buy a ticket or understanding fare structures.
Trevor chairs the UK’s Transport Card Forum Working Group 22 – Contactless Payments in Transport. This group has representatives of many major players in the transport and payments industries, and is doing ground breaking work on understanding the detailed issues surrounding the use of cashless payment in transport.

“I worked with Trevor recently on a project for the UK Department for Transport looking at the costs and benefits of smart ticketing across the whole of England to inform DfT’s smart ticketing strategy. Trevor proved very helpful and well connected in the transport smart card industry both in the UK and abroad. I will not hesitate to hire Trevor again when the opportunity arises.”
